The Lumipulse Blood Test for Alzheimer’s: What to Know

The Lumipulse blood test developed by Fujirebio is a new FDA-approved option that can help doctors check for signs of Alzheimer’s disease in people with memory problems. It’s not a screening test for healthy people, but it’s meant for adults 55 and older who already have symptoms of cognitive decline.

How it works

Alzheimer’s causes certain proteins in the brain to change. In blood, p-tau217 tends to go up and Aβ42 tends to go down. The Lumipulse test measures these proteins and reports a ratio that strongly matches what a brain scan (PET) or spinal fluid test would show.

Accuracy

Studies show the Lumipulse blood test agrees with PET or spinal fluid testing about 92–97% of the time. This makes it a reliable, less invasive alternative, though results still need to be interpreted by a doctor.

Where you can get it and Cost

Labcorp (#505809) and Quest both offers this test. Prices vary, but blood-based Alzheimer’s biomarker tests generally cost $400–$1,000 before insurance. Because this test is now FDA-cleared, insurance (including Medicare) may cover it when medically appropriate, though policies are still being finalized.

Key takeaways

• Best for adults 55+ with memory symptoms.

• Helps doctors decide if Alzheimer’s changes are present.

• Results should always be reviewed alongside medical history, exams, and possibly other tests.

If you or a loved one are experiencing memory changes, talk to a neurologist or memory specialist. They can help decide whether the Lumipulse test is the right next step.
