Can Cell Phones Cause Brain Tumors?

I first blogged about this possibility in 2010 [ link ], but at that time, there were too many conflicting studies that definitive conclusions could not be made though precautions were advisable. However, in May 2016, the National Institute of Health  released partial findings from a 2 year study that exposed rats to the same radio-frequency non-ionizing radiation given off by cell phones. The study found that exposure to mobile phone radiation significantly increased the prevalence of heart…

Aspirin Slows Brain Tumor Growth (Acoustic Neuroma)

Image from Wikipedia There is a type of benign brain tumor called acoustic neuroma or vestibular schwannoma that causes progressive hearing loss on just one side. This non-cancerous tumor which arises off the balance/hearing nerve (cranial nerve 8) typically grows larger in size over time leading to not only hearing loss, but also dizziness, facial paralysis, and even death if large enough. Harvard researchers, however, have recently reported that aspirin may  appear to slow and perhaps…

Bruce Jenner of the Kardashians with Hearing Loss Brain Tumor Scare

Image by jla0379 from Wikipedia This past weekend, fans of the TV show Keeping Up with the Kardashians found out that Bruce Jenner had what most likely was an asymmetric nerve hearing loss in his high frequencies when he had a hearing test done that lead to a brain tumor scare. What this means is that his ability to hear was much worse in one ear compared with the other... and it was due to nerve damage rather than earwax or fluid in the ears. Whenever there is this type of nerve …

Sinus Mass Chance Finding (Incidentaloma)

The New York Times published a great story on the dreaded incidentaloma on Jan 17, 2013. An incidentaloma is essentially a chance finding of a mass most likely benign, that was incidentally discovered on a CT or MRI scan ordered for a completely different reason. With such incidentalomas, it leads to patient anxiety causing physicians and surgeons to order even more tests and procedures (which themselves may lead to other incidentalomas). The vast majority of such incidentalomas are "no…

Sheryl Crow Blames Brain Tumor on Cell Phone Use

On the inaugural episode of Katie Couric's new talk show Katie , Sheryl Crow described her history with a brain tumor called meningioma which was found in her right temporal lobe. This diagnosis was reported in a previous blog post . Most interestingly, during the show, she blames the meningioma on excessive cell phone use years ago when she was on the phone for hours promoting her records using one of those archaic analog cell phones. The relationship between cell phone use and brain…

What is Asymmetric Nerve Hearing Loss

Given my last blog article regarding an ENT who got sued for not doing an MRI after audiogram showing an asymmetric hearing loss, the question that should be on everybody's mind is what IS asymmetric nerve hearing loss on a hearing test ? I am sad to report that there is no clear consensus on what is asymmetric nerve hearing loss. First of all, at its most basic definition, asymmetric nerve hearing loss is when hearing is worse in one ear when compared with the opposite ear due to n…
