Is Eating Your Boogers Really Good for You?

On 4/26/17, a variety of media sources reported that a scientific study claimed that eating your own boogers is healthy for you. Given the sensational headlines and pertinent ENT topic, I decided to investigate this claim further and actually read the study that was quoted as the scientific source . To preface,  NOWHERE in the quoted research study was the claim made that one should eat, chew, or ingest any nasal secretions, boogers, snot-rockets, or any other nasal secretions whether wet…

New Treatment for Sore Throat

Well according to American singer-songwriter Suzi Quatro, "I used to get a lot of sore throats and then one of my sisters told me that all illnesses start in the colon. I started taking a daily colon cleanser powder mixed with fresh juice every morning and it made an enormous difference," Quatro told the Daily Mail newspaper. It is unclear how many ounces of juice, what type of juice, and grams of colon cleansing powder was required to obtain this beneficial effect. For her outs…

Even Kids Can Spot Adult Bull^!#$& ... And Publish It in a Medical Journal!

Though often adults find kids to lack intellectual rigor and devoid of rational thought, sometimes it's the other way around. She watched a TV program about nurses who practise “Therapeutic Touch”, claiming they can detect and manipulate “human energy field” by hovering their hands above a patient. Emma recognized this adult nonsense and conducted a scientific study for a 4th grade science fair to not only p…

Why Does Medical Science Keep Changing Its Mind???

I read with interest a blog post by Robert Krulwich of NPR fame on why there is so much public resistance to accept changes in truth with new scientific discoveries (some of which was new to even me)... 1) Triceratops with their beautifully placed 3 horns is actually the teenage dinosaur version of the adult Torosaurus (who had ugly asymmetric horns). Now... a decision had to be made regarding which name to stick with. Ultimately, "Triceratops" won out, perhaps because of the &qu…

Natalie Portman, Scientific Genius in REAL Life!

The New York Times published a great article about the serious scientific credentials of some of hollywood's most celebrated stars, Natalie Portman among them. As a student at Syosset High School on Long Island back in the late 1990s, Ms. Portman made it all the way to the semifinal rounds of the Intel Science Talent Search competition. Her project was a new “environmentally friendly” method of converting waste into useful forms of energy. She also went to Harvard University and studi…

Mutter Medical Museum of the Odd, Strange, and Bizarre

In the spirit of Halloween that is coming up soon, I thought to share with everyone a FASCINATING museum located in Philadelphia, PA. The museum's full name is " Mütter Museum of College of Physicians of Philadelphia " and contains a fascinating collection of the bizarre aspect of medical sciences. Many of the exhibits are real and not for the faint of heart. Of course, I should mention that they have a number of exhibits related to ENT... including one of all the foreign bodies…
