Treatment for Dry Nose or Recurrent Nosebleeds Using Ponaris

Whenever the nose becomes excessively dry, especially during the winter, the nasal lining may become excessively dry leading to irritation and even nosebleeds if the nasal mucosa becomes chapped. This situation can also occur during a humid summer if lots of time is spent indoors with air conditioning. This product is also recommended to use daily for patients prone to nosebleeds due to taking a blood thinner like coumadin or plavix. Analagous to chapped lips, an oil-based nasal emollient sho…

Blood Thinner Use and Sino-Nasal Surgery (Septum and Sinus Surgery)

Cross-Section showing relationship of septum, sinus, eye, and brain There is an active abhorrence between blood thinner medications and ENT surgeons. Not only do blood thinners markedly increase risk of nosebleeds which often require nasal packing   (even without surgery), but it can complicate any type of sino-nasal surgery, particularly septoplasty and sinus surgery . With septoplasty or sinus surgery (collectively called sino-nasal surgery), not only is the nasal mucosa actively c…

Can Headaches Trigger Nosebleeds?

Image courtesy of stockimages at  FreeDigitalPhotos.net Ignoring high blood pressure headaches which can potentially rupture blood vessels in the nose leading to a nosebleed, can headaches in and of itself trigger nosebleeds? I encounter a few patients a year who report that a particularly bad headache triggered their nosebleed, also known as epistaxis . But can this actually be true? After all, headaches are common and nosebleeds are common. As such, statistically, two common events …

The Recurrent Recurrent Nosebleed Treatment - Sewing the Nostril Shut!

Bad nosebleeds are quite alarming, even when it happens once. But imagine 4+ bad nosebleeds a week for years that refuses to quit no matter what is tried: • Saline nasal sprays • Afrin nasal sprays • Ponaris • Silver nitrate cauterization • Electric cauterization • Laser cauterization • Nasal packing • Skin grafts • Estrogen sprays • Vascular embolization • Sinus surgery • Septal surgery And nothing still works! This is often the situation with patients suffering from HHT (…

Death From a Severe Nosebleed

Image by RIs from Wikipedia Attila the Hun was one of the most feared enemies of the Roman Empire. Ruler of the Huns from the year 434 until his death in 452, his empire stretched from Ural River to the Rhine River and from the Danube River to the Baltic Sea. Although there are numerous theories as to how he died, the conventional account is that he died from a severe nosebleed on his wedding night. Some may scoff that only people in historical times die from nosebleeds ... but it …

Foley Catheter to Stop Nosebleed???

A foley catheter, as shown above, is normally used to drain urine from the bladder, but it can also be used to stop severe nosebleeds ... albeit under dire circumstances and when there is no other suitable alternative. Normally, for a severe nosebleed , the nose can be packed with a tampon like packing material. The packing material I like best is a rapid rhino which is illustrated below. Nasal packing like the rapid rhino exerts pressure within the nose to the point whereby the blee…

How Does Nasal Packing Stop Nosebleeds?

It is not unusual for an ENT or an Emergency Room physician to see a patient with a very bad nosebleed ... the kind that can potentially be life-threatening given how much active bleeding is occurring. In these situations, nasal packing is the fastest and best way of stopping the nosebleed. For any type of active bleeding, direct pressure tamponades the bleeding thereby stopping it... whether it be a stab wound to the leg or a bad nosebleed . In essence, direct pressure exerts a cert…

Bacon Can Stop Nosebleeds! No joke...

When I saw this research, I had to re-read it to believe it... Nasal packing with good-old fashioned bacon stops nosebleeds !!! Yes... you heard me correctly... and it was actually published in a reputable ENT journal in Nov 2011. AND, it was conducted here in the USA (Detroit, Michigan). "Cured salted pork crafted as a nasal tampon and packed within the nasal vaults successfully stopped nasal hemorrhage promptly, effectively, and without sequelae … To our knowledge, this represe…

Nosebleeds... It's That Time of Year Again!

With the fall season, the air becomes cooler and dryer... Families start turning on the heat which further dries the air leading to a potent environmental situation ideal for nosebleeds . What can you do to minimize nosebleeds ? Use a humidifier in the bedroom and keep the door closed to prevent the humidity from escaping. Use a nasal emollient like ponaris . Ponaris is a wonderful product to alleviate the dry, irritated, and sometimes burning sensation in the nose. It is also a great p…

Dr. Oz Does Nosebleeds (With Some Errors)

A reader informed me that Dr. Oz did a TV show recently on nosebleeds ... I took a look at the video clip and it is my opinion that some information Dr. Oz conveyed is not entirely correct. Again, I should stress that this is just my opinion and I'm sure there will be many who may feel differently. Error #1: Contrary to what was said on the show, ice packs do NOT help with nosebleeds significantly. Though it makes sense that cold constricts the blood vessels... it does so only at th…

Vaginal Premarin Cream for Recurrent Nosebleeds?

It is an old trick of the trade where a physician may prescribe vaginal premarin cream to treat recurrent nosebleeds . The premarin (estrogen) cream (just as it does when placed vaginally) causes the nasal mucosa lining to thicken thereby "burying" the superficial blood vessels that are often the culprits for recurrent nosebleeds. Application is by rubbing the cream 2-3X per day to the anterior wall of the nasal septum ( Kiesselbach's plexus ) where 90% of nosebleed sources ar…

Even Figure Skaters Get Nosebleeds (During Competition)!

If anyone was watching the figure skating short program for the 2010 Olympics last night (2/23/10), you may have seen American figure skater Mirai Nagasu get a bloody nose halfway through her program. "Even though I felt the blood come down my nose, I said, 'Don't stop, keep going,' she said, blaming the dry air for her malady. 'I still did the best I could.'" Read more about this in the NYT here . Pictures can be found here . Read more about nosebleeds a…

How Does A Deviated Septum Cause A Nosebleed?

Over the years, I have been asked by a number of patients with deviated septums why that would make them more prone to nosebleeds . Well, this blog article is to answer that very question. First off, a little anatomy... A nasal septum is a wall that separates the right nasal cavity from the left side. Normally, this septum should be perfectly straight. However, in some people, the septum may be deviated causing not only nasal obstruction, but increases the risk of nosebleeds. When…
