Misleading FoxNews Report: Laryngitis for 30 Years

On Dec 23, 2011, Fox News reported on a woman who supposedly had laryngitis for 30 years. The story reported that the woman had a viral URI in 1982 which resulted in laryngitis and a paralyzed vocal cord . What people should be aware of is that a paralyzed vocal cord is NOT laryngitis. Laryngitis is an infection of the larynx or voicebox. USA Today: Article on Vocal Cord Paralysis Causing Breathy Voice

On June 1, 2010 USA Today published a story titled " Lost your voice? It could be vocal cord paresis ." The story discusses how vocal cord paralysis can cause a breathy type of hoarse voice. New Video Uploaded of Adult Laryngomalacia

A new video has been uploaded to our website showing what laryngomalacia looks like in an adult. This patient also happens to have a right vocal cord paralysis. Because of the vocal cord paralysis, there is some hooding of her arytenoid mucosa resulting in partial airway blockage, especially with strong inhalation breath (and produces a slight wheezing sound as well). New Video Example of Vocal Cord Immobility

A new video example of vocal cord immobility has been posted to our website. This example depicts how one can determine if a vocal cord immobility is due to paralysis (nerve damage) or due to arytenoid dislocation. Arytenoid is the joint that moves a vocal cord back and forth. This example used direct manipulation of the vocal cord to make this determination. Another method of evaluating (not shown) include laryngeal EMG.
