Blood Thinner Use and Sino-Nasal Surgery (Septum and Sinus Surgery)

Cross-Section showing relationship of septum, sinus, eye, and brain There is an active abhorrence between blood thinner medications and ENT surgeons. Not only do blood thinners markedly increase risk of nosebleeds which often require nasal packing   (even without surgery), but it can complicate any type of sino-nasal surgery, particularly septoplasty and sinus surgery . With septoplasty or sinus surgery (collectively called sino-nasal surgery), not only is the nasal mucosa actively c…

Why Is a Nosejob Sometimes Necessary to Resolve Nasal Obstruction?

A very common complaint for a patient to see an ENT surgeon is to resolve nasal obstruction. The most common surgeries to resolve nasal obstruction include septoplasty , adenoidectomy , and turbinate reduction . All of theses procedure are performed within the nasal cavity and does not affect appearance. However, sometimes in order to resolve nasal obstruction , the appearance of the nose MUST change especially if the nostril openings are very narrow. By looking at these example pictures o…

Actress Jennifer Aniston Underwent Septoplasty Twice

Though not entirely recent news, actress Jennifer Aniston reportedly underwent septoplasty nasal surgery not just once, but twice. The first was done in 1994 and a revision septoplasty was performed in January 2007. [ link ] [ wiki ] This type of surgery is performed to help improve nasal breathing, an issue that Jennifer Aniston apparently had. Septoplasty , unlike rhinoplasty or nosejob, does NOT change the outside appearance of the nose. All the work is done internally. (Watch video h…

Why Does the Nose Whistle in Some People?

Though most people like the professional nose whistler shown here require an instrument to enable the nose to whistle, in others it occurs naturally due to unique anatomic features within the nose. Why might someone's nose whistle? Septal Perforation The most common reason it may occur constantly is due to a hole in the septum (septal perforation). The septum is a wall that divides the right nasal cavity from the left side. Normally, it should be straight and without any openings. R…

Can a Deviated Septum Cause Facial Pain?

Yes... There is a phenomenon caused Sluder's Neuralgia whereby a patient may suffer fairly severe pain over the cheek and around the eye due to a severe deviated septum ... not just any deviated septum, but a sub-type called a septal spur. As an introduction, a nasal septum is a wall that divides the nasal cavity down the middle. This nasal wall is much larger than people realize... perhaps a little bigger than a large man's watch. In some individuals, the septum (purple arro…

Does the Nose Appearance Change After Septoplasty? (Answer: No)

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to straighten out a deviated septum causing problems with nasal obstruction/congestion . A common question I get asked is whether the nose appearance will change after this surgery. The answer is no (if correctly done). In fact, if the nasal appearance DID change afterwards, you would also have undergone rhinoplasty nose job... or too much was unintentionally removed. The explanation for why the nasal appearance does not (should not) change after septopl…

Being a Hairdresser Can Destroy Your Nose!

On Oct 14, 2010, there was a story out of England about a hairdresser whose nose slowly collapsed due to damage sustained from breathing in hair clippings for 35 years. Apparently, over a period of 20 years, the small hair clippings slowly caused damage to her septum to the point it caused a perforation. The perforation than led to infection which further weakened her nose structure to the point it started to collapse... a type of nasal deformity called a saddle nose. Of course, it just …
