Dr. Chang Referenced in ER Journal Article

First Page Preview It's nice to get noticed, even at the prestigious Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Two emergency room physicians at this hospital published an article on how to manage bleeding after tonsillectomy and used photos that Dr. Chang took and published in his blog, " Bleeding After Tonsillectomy ". Although you need to get behind a paid firewall, you can certainly still read the abstract here and take a look at all the pictures used in the arti…

Why Aren't Medical Research Papers Available for Free?

Policy Guidelines for the Development and Promotion of Open Access, UNESCO Medical research abstracts are freely available to read from databases like pubmed , but if you want to read the entire paper, only very rarely are they available for free. That's a big bummer for small community physicians as well as lay public who want to know more about a particular medical condition or research findings. Don't Like a Research Paper? Sue the Journal and Authors...

What is a lawyer to do if medical research produces results that make it more difficult to win lawsuits? Why you sue the medical journal and the researchers who authored it. Azithromycin Increases Risk of Death Slightly... Well, So Does Tylenol and Ibuprofen

The media has made much fuss about a NEJM study suggesting a slight increased risk of death from taking azithromycin or z-pack. The more unhealthy you are, the higher the risk... no duh... (I would think the sicker you are, the greater the risk of death PERIOD... a sick person by definition is closer to death than a healthy person). How slight? Compared to amoxicillin, about 47 additional cardiovascular deaths per one million courses of therapy. Never mind the blatant biases found in th…

Even Kids Can Spot Adult Bull^!#$& ... And Publish It in a Medical Journal!

Though often adults find kids to lack intellectual rigor and devoid of rational thought, sometimes it's the other way around. Take Emma Rosa, age 9, who debunked the idea of therapeutic touch back in 1998. She watched a TV program about nurses who practise “Therapeutic Touch”, claiming they can detect and manipulate “human energy field” by hovering their hands above a patient. Emma recognized this adult nonsense and conducted a scientific study for a 4th grade science fair to not only p…

Allergy/Pollen Tracker for Your iPhone

I was amazed to find that there are a few programs out there for the iPhone that provides allergy count information as well as forecasts... at last check, there are 4 main ones in the app store on iTunes. Some are rated highly and others not so high. I'm not going to go too much into the description and ratings as this info can be easily found on the iTunes app store. Links are provided. The most highly rated application I found is called Zyrtec AllergyCast and is FREE! Another fairly new b…
